Taiwanese computer maker Asus said yesterday that the sony pcga-bp1n battery scarcity could blow a massive 40 per cent hole in its second quarter shipments. The firm’s vice president Kevin Lin raised the alarm at a news conference.
He told Reuters: "The shortage could affect 30-40 per cent of second quarter shipments, but it looks like a short-term issue.”

However, it also admitted that it has raised prices on its separately sold batteries used for replacements or for additional notebook power because of the lack of batteries in the market right now.
A Dell spokesman said: "Pricing is being impacted by current availability. But we are working with our partners throughout our supply chain sony pcga-bp2ea battery to reduce the impact on our customers.”
HP was slightly more reticent about the shortage, but did tell Reuters that it is in “regular communication” with LG Chem – the battery maker whose Ochang plant went up in flames on 3 March.
A HP spokesman said in a statement: "The full extent of the impact to hp laptop battery and other OEMs is still being determined.
"We are aggressively working within the battery cell industry to secure additional supply of battery cells."
LG Chem, which is South Korea’s second biggest hp f4809a battery vendor, said its factory will be out of action for up to three months.

Sony on Tuesday announced a new type of rechargeable lithium ion battery that promises a life span more than four times that of current lithium ion batteries. Specifically, Sony touts a capacity retention north of 80 percent after 2,000 charge-discharge cycles.
Without getting too technical about the whole thing, the new sony pcga-bp1n battery,sony pcga-bp2e battery uses as its cathode material olivine-type lithium iron phosphate, which Sony says is ideal for the job "due to its robust crystal structure and stable performance, even at high temperatures."
The material also apparently contributes to the battery's faster charging time--it can hit 99 percent of its full capacity in 30 minutes (approximately half the charge time of Sony's current lithium ion sony pcga-bp2ea battery,sony pcga-bp2nx battery line, which mainly use cobalt oxide-based cathodes).
For the moment, the sony pcga-bp2ny battery,sony pcga-bp2r battery will just be showing up in motor-driven devices like power tools--so if you own a cordless band saw, you're in luck. Those of us who just need to worry about powering our iPods and laptops, however, will have to wait a little while.

Perfect battery could power electric cars
Scientists in the US have built a lithium based 'super battery' that releases its charge 100 times faster than a regular rechargeable. They say their design has applications in renewable energy storage and will help researchers build a better dell laptop battery for hybrid electric vehicles.
Lithium ion batteries are already ubiquitous in consumer electronics. They are the rechargeable batteries widely used to power mobile phones and laptops. But scaling these up for electric cars, for instance, requires a dramatic improvement in charge and discharge rates - otherwise a plug-in electric vehicle would need to be plugged in for many hours to fully recharge.
Byoungwoo Kang and Gerbrand Ceder at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have now developed materials for a high power dell inspiron 1100 battery,dell inspiron 1150 battery that discharges in just 10-20 seconds. 'We show that by simply tweaking the composition of the battery material we can achieve fast charging and discharging rates - like a supercapacitor - while keeping energy density comparable with a battery,' says Kang.
The team's battery is based on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) nanoparticles with a five nanometre thick glassy coating in which the levels of iron, phosphorus and oxygen are reduced. In a battery, charge and discharge rates depend on quick delivery of lithium ions and electrons to the material. According to the researchers, their glassy coating has high Li+ mobility and helps speed the delivery of the ions.

Made with oxyhydroxide, fresh Oxyride batteries provide 1.7 volts compared with 1.5 volts for regular alkaline batteries. David Pogue's comparison tests for The New York Times show that regular alkaline batteries last longer in a device that's on continuously, but Oxyride batteries have significantly longer runtime if the device is used intermittently. If you take a few shots with your camera and then turn it off, for example, the Oxyride batteries will last longer.
However, based on many comparison tests, reviews agree that for long runtime in a digital camera, Energizer e2 Lithium ( *Est. $12 per four-pack, AA) are the most cost-effective disposable hp 398876-001 battery,hp 417066-001 battery. Even though they cost more than alkaline batteries, they can take so many more photos that each photo costs much less to shoot. Recovery time between shots is generally good, and it's more convenient to change batteries less often.
We did find one reviewer who notes a drawback to the Energizer e2 Lithium batteries when used in digital cameras. Troy Dreier of PC Magazine notes that the e2 batteries have a power output of 1.3 volts compared to 1.5 volts for typical alkaline batteries, a difference that Dreier says can affect refresh rate in your camera (and determines how quickly you can squeeze off another shot).

Since lithium batteries keep their charge for ten years, they're a good addition to a disaster kit. Lithium batteries also weigh about 30 percent less, so they're ideal for travel cameras and flashlights. Some of the best such flashlights use the tiny cylindrical C123A lithium batteries. Many brands of C123A are expensive, but at FlashlightReviews.com, an enthusiast site, reviewer Doug Pribis recommends Titanium Innovations CR123A (*est. $1 each) found online. He also recommends Pila 600S rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (*est. $36 for four), which work with most (but not all) flashlights that use C123A batteries.

The electrolyte leak can also cause minor skin damage and requires careful handling.

What battery is best?
Battery novices often brag about miracle batteries that offer very high energy densities, deliver 1000 charge/discharge cycles and are paper-thin. These attributes are indeed achievable but not on one and the same battery pack.
